Maura Dhu’s husband, Wes Studi, is a renowned actor known for his roles as Native American characters. Wes volunteered for active service and went to Vietnam for 12 months with the 3rd Battalion and 39th Infantry Division. He taught the Cherokee language and syllabary and was in the team that helped establish a Cherokee language newspaper.

Wes received an Academy Honorary Award in 2019 and became the first Native American and the first Indigenous person from North America to be honored by the Academy.
