Despite his successful career in Hollywood, Mitchum’s career was not without controversy. He was arrested in 1948 for marijuana possession, an incident that briefly affected his career and led to a tarnished public image. Robert died in his sleep on July 1 1997, in his home in Santa Barbara, California. He had been receiving treatment for long cancer and emphysema due to his smoking habit. His body was cremated and ashes scattered into the Pacific Ocean in a private ceremony.
